Today, I visited the Reifen fair in Frankfurt.
You don't know this fair?
I am not surprised as this is a new and "co-located" concept of the Automechanika fair with a license from the Reifen Messe in Essen. The company behind Automechanika and Reifen Frankfurt, Messe Frankfurt, has also already scheduled another combined Automechanika & Reifen fair in Shanghai, China, on November 28th - December 1st 2018 where I will participate and where I also will present on the topic of tire recycling and recoverd carbon black (shout-out and thanks to David Wilson, publisher of Tyre & Rubber Recycling and Flora Chan from Messe Frankfurt in Hongkong).
Hall 12.1., on the top floor of hall 12, is where the Reifen fair is located, shared with stands related to vintage car restauration. At the entrance, the two biggest booths are inviting you, Petlas and BKT (see above title picture!). Of the global superstar tire companies, Bridgestone is present with a stand (and good Italian coffee ☕️). Other exhibitors are tire producers from China (e.g. Wanli, Linglong, Doublestar), India and even Ukraine and also tire distributors and tire storage / handling system suppliers.
It is mainly the tire sales distribution chain exhibiting. The tire raw material chain will follow once Messe Frankfurt also creates a technical conference forum like planned for the Reifen Shanghai fair. This is the successful formula of the established TireTech Expo & conference and also of the new Tire Cologne Expo & conference.
With the Reifen Frankfurt fair being a new event, there certainly is scope for growth in terms of booth numbers and visitors, but I have also spoken to many exhibitors who were extremely happy with their business on Reifen Frankfurt so far.
Long term, the Reifen Frankfurt fair will need to position itself with a unique value proposition as many companies won't attend or exhibit at 2-3 tire fairs per year. Involving the established, domestic and local tire sites and technical centres to participate will also help (e.g. Pirelli, Goodyear, Michelin, Nexen, Conti, Hankook, etc.).
Among the fun things I did during Reifen Frankfurt was meeting with Jonathan Webster from the sports marketing company Lagardère Sports. We spoke and also met with tire companies on the topic of alternative sponsorship opportunities with the German football club Borussia Dortmund! A refreshing change from just talking about tire recycling and tire raw materials!
