Dear colleagues & friends of recovered Carbon Black,
(Do we also have our friends of furnace carbon black in here?? Please say hi in the comments!)
Here is your monthly dose of recovered Carbon Black news. We now have 5.942 subscribers. How about sharing this newsletter with your colleagues and your LinkedIn network? Can we get to 6k subscribers next month??
📈 How many rCB grades do we need?
The new ASTM WK84831 classification proposal for recovered carbon blacks is easily the most useful news of the year for the recovered Carbon Black industry.
But, how can we best use and implement this proposal in our business?
The four analysis methods with 5, 4, 4 and 3 quality categories respectively would give us 240 product varieties. Do we really need all of these? And how can we combine the rCB Rubber proposal from Michelin and Bridgestone EMEA with this ASTM classification?
I have developed answers to these questions over the last couple of days and I am writing up an "expert briefing" report on recovered carbon black classifications and quality control. Spoiler alert: I don't think we need that many quality levels for each analysis method. I recommend using a binary system of "high" and "low" for each analysis. That brings down the total number of recovered carbon black products to 16. These are still too many products, but those are way better to handle.
Now we can bring in the rCB Rubber proposal and my very own recovered carbon black specification of 2021, which - by the way - are still used for market sizes and product pricing in the industry reference report "Prospects for recovered Carbon Black 2023". In combination, we can identify less than a handful of key viable recovered carbon black products with some regional variations.
Watch out for my "expert briefing" report on recovered carbon black classifications and quality control, which will be soon available in my webshop!
🖤 Review of Sustainable Carbon Black Workshop
In this year's Smithers online workshop, we not only discussed recovered carbon black, but also methane blacks, circular blacks and renewable blacks. For this, I invited Robert Hanson from Monolith and Paul Ita from Notch Consulting, LLC and we had a 160 minutes expert conversation on sustainability and carbon blacks. We had 30 participants to the workshop with more than usual engagement with lots of questions.
I have to say, although my heart is for recovered Carbon Black, what most impressed me was the update from Robert Hanson . I believe Monolith was the first disruptor in the carbon black industry and the company changed the industry paradigm towards sustainability. Monolith could also be taken as a role model for the still developing recovered Carbon Black industry.
Watch Robert explain the Monolith story in under a minute in my Youtube Short:
🇨🇱 Chinese pyrolysis reactor for sale in Santiago de Chile
A while ago I talked with a friend in Chile who acquired a Chinese batch pyrolysis reactor line, but never installed or operated it. The reactor line is the NX -1 50 reactor from Shenyang Nengxing Energy Technology Co., Ltd. It has a capacity for 50 tons per day and it comes with heat exchangers, condensers and oil fractioning. Its price in 2014 was $1m. Today's price is negotiable.
If you are interested in buying this reactor, please let me know and I can make a contact.
🇵🇪 SLTC Jornadas Caucho / Reciclaje in Lima, Peru
I am super stoked that I will be attending and presenting about recovered Carbon Black at the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Tecnología del Caucho 's Jornadas de Caucho and Jornadas de Reciclaje Conference in Lima, Peru!
But not only that; before the Jornadas Lima, I will visit the in Porto Alegre, Brazil!
Stay tuned about my visits, here on Linkedin and on my Youtube channel. I am planning some live streams from Lima and Porto Alegre.
Do you want to attend the Jornadas Lima, too? Please contact Emanuel Bertalot , Karina Potarsky or Marly Jacobi !
Well, that is all for today. Thank you very much for reading!
Take care, best wishes from Berlin,
Martin
